…are founding together the base of the daily structure of tasks that anyone is invited to join in while staying at Sunde Kommun, because it creates this special sense of atmosphere and community feeling that you would not want to miss in a place like this!

Chill-out time in the garden...

…is a very essential activity no one should miss out on when coming to Sundre Kommun! It’s just the perfect place to lay around in the sun or in of the many hammocks, read a good book and listen to music or the sound of the birds and the wind.

Let’s light up the sauna!

In the secluded back of our garden we have a wood-fired sauna which fits up to 2-6 people easily.

The Sauna Garden

It is really a very special place, indeed one of our most favorite ones. Fenced in by trees and an old Gotlandic wall, as well as surrounded by the fields, it’s tranquility definitely invites to stay for more than a sauna visit. For example on sunny days we will also host the yoga sessions there. In the garden there is also an old house, in fact just a ruin, which we are thinking of turning in future into a little meditation house / space for all kinds of prayers, regardless of any religion.

Not far from here, there leads a

Meditation Walk down towards the sea...

and it takes about 20-30 min by foot, 10 min by bike. You arrive at Kettelvik, a little fishing village nested in a bay with a yeti and big rocks to climb over and a bit further a steep cliff with a small sand beach underneath.

On the way to the water...

we will show you the almost hidden way towards the Sunset Spot. It’s an amazing way like out of ‘Lord of the Rings’ and the Sunset Spot itself is kind of a big rock or rather cliff in the middle of the landscape which thrones over a field where sometimes sheep are peaceful grazing and behind this: only the water and the sun going down.

We have a plate that can be put up everywhere in the garden or in our PingPongRoom. Rackets are provided as well.

There is the possibility to play some games on the neighbour’s boule court.

For everyone who always wanted to learn the art of playing and dancing with fire, there are private classes and sessions for

FireDance as well as FireMeditations available!

FireDance is like a movement meditation. Because for moving around safely with the flames, you have to be present in the moment (and aware of your breathing rhythm) for not getting burned while playing with fire. FireDance is also incorporating various inspirations drawn from yoga poses as well as fusing elements from modern classical dance genres with ancient combat techniques and dance forms from all across Asia, Africa, Native America & Zealandia.

FireMeditation is a tool for calming down your mind, hightening your senses, shifting your focus, training to think positively, strengthening your willpower, and for thinking forward and for letting go of old baggage. The fire lets you feel its heat, its joy of life, and while watching the flame(s), it just invites you to be fully present in this moment and only concentrate on your breathing while locking your gaze on its dance.
In comparison to the FireDance Sessions, FireMeditation focusses more on a ritualistic aspect and is inspired by the Trataka-Meditation-Technique and the Havan Ritual as well as the (Ganga) Aarti – Fire Ceremony in Rishikesh, India.

* How to explore the island? *

By Bike…

Rent bikes to explore the island. Drive along vacker kustvägen “the beautiful coast way” or surround whole sudret “the south” by bike…

By Foot…

…as well as by foot! Hiking the same way and then back over small country roads and the bumpy road behind our farm which besides farmers and tractors only fox and rabbit occasionally use. Walking continuously along the cost is therefore not possible that the landscape is frequently interrupted by the rocks, especially like by the famous “rauker” close to Holmhällar. There are so many different types of landscapes in all directions you go here, it never gets boring.

By Kayak…

You can also rent kajaks for exploring the nature reserves around the island by sea way. It’s a totally different perspective onto the island and you won’t be believe what kind of real treasures we have found along the cost. This landscape here never disappoints an adventurer.

* What else to discover? *

Hoburgen & Majstre Restaurant

The most southern point of the island is called Hoburgen and is not even a handful of kilometers away from the farm where Sunde Kommun is located. In summers there is also a restaurant called “Majstre”, the “master”, after a nearby located farm. Climbing on the rocks by the water you will find caves washed into the cliff.

Beaches and where to find them…

On the west coast you will find around our area mostly stony beaches, whereas east of Hoburgen there are also nice sandy beaches next to the rauker “the rocks” in Holmhällar.

Holmhäller Pensionat/Vandrarhem

Holmhäller Pensionat/Vandrarhem also offers simple and good “husmanskost” (in Swedish or “Hausmannskost” in German) during high season around the month of July. The food is delicious and the place between these old pine trees is a well known hide-away for many people where they come to enjoy their lunch.

Körsbärsgården Café & Art Gallery

Körsbärsgården Art Gallery is also a place which you should definitely not miss out on! The various exhibitions are showing paintings and sculptures from artists from far and near.

Up until 2024 there was a café, but it is not operating right now because it’s looking for a new owner and someone who manages it with love & care as Marita & Jon and their children used to run it every summer in the past.

If you know of someone whose dream it always was to run a cute little café on an island, please let us know. We are happy to help our neighbours with finding responsible people who could take over.

Stonery Museum

Along the cost you will also find the Stonery Museum, where you can find out more about the history of cutting and using the special kind of kalkstone from the island – also called the “gotlandic marble” because depending on the perspective it shows similar stone structure like marble, hence the name.

Churches & Runic Inscriptions

Besides all these, if you are interested in a church tour, then let’s discover the traces of the transition from Paganism to Christianity which you can still find build in to the new floors of the churches or even exhibited along the walls, like in Hamra church for example. But even Sundre church hides still one in front of the altar.

Viking Sites

Here and there you will also come across other remains from the Viking Era. In case you have time to pass Gannarve Gård on your way down here or up to Visby again, then also take some time to discover the ship of stone, an old viking memorial.

Bird Watching

Not far from our farm, after the church, next to the main road towards direction Burgsvik you will find Muskmyr naturreservat. It has a parking space and behind it a lake-svamp-landscape with a bird watch tower at the beginning and a wooden walkway around the lake. Especially in spring you can find hundreds of different bird species around our area. They use the island’s most southern little tip for a last stop before they cross the Baltic Sea on their North-South route.

So don’t forget to bring your binoculars!
