About us

Our Vision

We consider COVID-19 as one of the “lucky circumstances” that gave us the push to finally start living our dream because it is not sure where world and nature are heading to.

The only thing we can take for granted, is that change will happen.

Or like Heraclitus, the ancient Greek philosopher said:
“The only constant in life is change.”

Sundre Kommun: A mosaic of possibilities on Gotland's green screen

ABOUT US

The Sundre Kommun project is located in Sundre, which is one of the most southern villages in Solsudret the “sunny south” (“Sonnensüden”) on Gotland, the biggest Swedish island in the Baltic Sea.

It’s not called Solsudret without reason – it is indeed the sunniest spot of whole Sweden with the most sunny hours per year.

SUNDRE KOMMUN
is a secret oasis & colourful community with annually varying constellations of individuals striving to offer diverse spaces for creatives, artsy & artistic people, mindful nature lovers & adventurers of all kinds.

Find out more about
the STORY of SUNDRE KOMMUN
and how this old farm came to life again:

SUNDRE KOMMUN is a project created by Magnus and Theresa, a multicultural couple from England-Sweden-Germany. He is a photographer, a filmmaker, a self-taught artist and passionate traveller – she is a dance&movement pedagogue, a circus artist and a yoga teacher. They met in Berlin.

A part of Magnus’ family is from the island, so he has natural roots here. In the 90s he found this treasure of land with an old Barn on it but it wasn’t until 2019/2020 when we finally started thinking about doing something bigger with it. Long ago the building once really used to be a barn for animals. Before we started the renovation works, one could still see some remains peaking through: The stall used to have a much lower ceiling because it had a second floor for the hay. Then here and there you could find an antique looking tool from times when people where still working entirely without agricultural machines on their fields… as well as an old drinking pot for the animals made out of one piece of giant stone.

The family who used to run this farm for many generations is still today living around the corner from us working on their new farm. After the animals came the wood. Then the place used to be a carpentry for many years. Lucky circumstances and a neighbour gifted us with one example of the chairs which were made here and it found its old-new home in our kitchen again.

The idea for SUNDRE KOMMUN was formed over the years (since 2017) when lots of friends & family from all over the world came visiting. The concept for the project manifested during the Covid-19 pandemic when we could truly feel the place was suffering from the lack of laughter from people. Also us two could not fill this emptiness and overall we thought that this place is just too big and too beautiful for not sharing it with other people and bringing it again to live.

“Bringing it again to life” was not as quickly done as said – and it’s easier said than you can imagine what steps a project like this it all takes.

In 2021 we started the renovation works on the BigBarn and finally in 2025 we are coming to an end… well it’s never the end, especially not when it comes to construction works, because there is always something to add, to improve or repair. But with the help of many lovely human beings and the input of so many different individuals who brought diverse skills and abilities along, we were able to get to a point where we can proudly present our project to the public again!

We invite you to come by and enjoy the vibe, participate in one of our workshops, cook & eat with us, chill out in the hammocks, spend some time in our wood-fired sauna and stay over night & dream away in one of our many bedrooms!

The SUNDRE KOMMUN project comes to life and grows with and through the love, the passion and the creativity of the whole community 🙂

About us

The building project

All we have to do . . . is a bunch of stuff

Lucky circumstances, thousands of ideas and endlessly many dreams piled up over the past five years and made us think of a use for this old neglected farm. We both felt an inner urgency to not only create a place for people to sleep&eat at, but also a place for different types&styles of events – some from guests for guests – and a whole community around them.

We have been living there (in a tiny part of it, strictly speaking in the renovated pig stall) for quite some time already but finally took the step to transfer our visions into reality. In December 2021 the construction works on the old barns finally began and with the help of a gotlandic architect and his lovely team we can proudly announce our project start in Summer 2024! Not only will the barns be renewed, we want to give life to this old farm, turn it into an eco-friendly and self-sustainable space and make it a creative-colourful-cultural meeting point for people from far and near, from Sweden and from abroad.

So far we will be able to offer next summer 5 new double bedrooms, a suite, the BigBarn with a community space&kitchen, the studio (former PingPongRoom) and the OldCommunitySleepingLoft… and a lot of outdoor space as well as a sauna!

Looking forward to start building compost toilets, the treehouse & the amphitheater in April!

We are dreaming of enlarging the core group of organizers with work & travelers, people who would like to become part of the community and participate in transferring part after part of the bigger project into action in exchange for food & stay. This community will form every year anew, with new constellations of people for bringing in inspirations and contributing new input to it. This group of people will then help out with keeping the place up and running, renting out the rooms & event spaces as well as creating own events for and with the community and all guests from outside.

Do you see yourself in this creative project? Does it sound interesting to you? Would you like to support us in some way?
